And a Solopreneur, it’s important to remember that building a successful online presence is a marathon, not a sprint and your marketing is a crucial part of your training!

Your marketing strategy should have a solid base – you wouldn’t run that marathon without months of training right?. In this post, I’m sharing delve the three online marketing must-dos for solopreneurs. 

These points will help you navigate the digital landscape, connect with your target audience effectively and build a lasting, foundational online presence.

Marketing Must-Do #1
Prioritize Knowing Your Target Audience REALLY Well

Understanding your target audience is the cornerstone of effective marketing – you cannot speak to or create for an audience you don’t understand. 

While it might seem tempting to chase the latest trends or be present on every social media platform, doing so without a clear understanding of who you’re trying to reach and connect with can be the perfect example of “spinning your wheels”.

You could be expending valuable resources reaching the wrong people.

Think of it this way:

Imagine you’re a health & fitness coach and you are offering online courses for easy, at-home workouts. 

Your target client is a working mom who wants to be able to get her exercise in during busy days and lots of life juggling. 

Without a clear understanding of this target audience – their needs, their desires, their challenges – you might be creating content and marketing campaigns aimed at too broad a range of women.  

Knowing the women you want to reach helps target your content, messaging and promotion. 

Remember, you can’t speak to them if you don’t understand them.

Adjust Your Marketing Expectations

We have been conditioned in our digital, get-it-now world to expect instant gratification.

And as solopreneurs, it can be easy to create something, put it out there and expect it to be a total success. However, it’s important to recognize that good, effective marketing is a long-term strategy. 

Building a strong online presence and nurturing customer relationships take time – overnight success is the exception, not the rule.

On average, a digital marketing campaign should be allowed to run for 90 days (3 months) before it can be deemed as successful or in need of some tweaking. 

When we’re building a business, growing an audience and trying hard to make it all work it’s natural to want things to have quickly but marketing it’s quick – it’s foundational. 

Having your expectations set and realistic before launching any campaign will make everything more manageable.

Put Focus On The Community You Want To Build

If you’re building a business online, you should be building your community right along with it.

Your community is the audience that wants what you have and they are who you want to serve. 

Create connection with your community by speaking not just to their needs but to their desires – what they are dreaming of, where they want to be at the end of their transformation. 

Instead of focusing too much on product and service promotions, create content that educates and empowers your audience. Make them feel that within your community, they will get the knowledge, resources and support to reach their goals and make it through their transformation. 

As you create this community, your marketing efforts will go beyond transactional interactions – it will foster a sense of belonging and shared values among your audience, your community.

This community-driven approach will not only drive sales but enhances brand loyalty and advocacy – turning your community into a powerful marketing tool. 


In the fast-paced world of online marketing, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of strategies and tactics available.
